Should I Renovate My House Before I Sell It?

by Kyle Crabb

In the current market, it is likely that you should not renovate a home before selling.

While major remodeling or more costly replacements are not advised there are some other lower cost improvements that will help your home sell for top dollar in any market –

  1. Home staging – Staging a home can help a home that is on the dated side, look more modern.
  2. Carpet replacement – Stained or unique (think animal print or bright blue) carpet can be concerning to buyers. It is relatively cheaper to replace carpet if needed so this cost is often recouped when the home is sold.
  3. Tidy up the lawn – A clean front yard is important because of first impressions. Often backyards are a big selling point to buyers too so it is important that both are well maintained. We recommend adding mulch to flower beds or dirt areas and adding low maintenance or native plants for a pop of color.
  4. No matter how updated the home is, it is always best to make sure the home is clean. It is important to make the home show its best so window washing and deep cleaning are advised before listing.
